### II. The Misguided and Their Rejection of Truth (Verses 6-7)

These verses describe those who prefer idle talk over Allah's guidance, leading them to arrogance and a painful punishment.

*   6. And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.

*   7. And when Our verses are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly as if he had not heard them, as if there were in his ears deafness. So give him tidings of a painful punishment.

### III. The Reward of the Righteous (Verses 8-9)

In contrast to the misguided, this section promises Gardens of Pleasure for those who believe and perform righteous deeds.

*   8. Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them are the Gardens of Pleasure,

*   9. Abiding eternally therein. [It is] the promise of Allah [which is] truth. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

### IV. Allah's Creation as Signs of His Power and Oneness (Verses 10-11)

The Surah points to the wonders of creation – the heavens, mountains, diverse creatures, and life-giving rain – as undeniable proofs of Allah's unique creative power.

*   10. He created the heavens without pillars that you see and has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with you, and dispersed therein from every creature. And We sent down rain from the sky and made grow therein [plants] of every noble kind.

*   11. This is the creation of Allah. So show Me what those other than Him have created. Rather, the wrongdoers are in clear error.

### V. The Wisdom of Luqman: Advice to His Son (Verses 12-19)

This central section details the counsel given by Luqman to his son, encompassing core Islamic tenets and moral conduct.

A. Gratitude to Allah (Verse 12)

Luqman's wisdom begins with the importance of gratitude towards Allah, which ultimately benefits oneself.

*   12. And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is only grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need, Praiseworthy.

B. The Oneness of Allah (Tawhid) and Prohibition of Shirk (Verse 13)

The foremost advice is to avoid associating partners with Allah (Shirk), which is described as a great injustice.

*   13. And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with Him] is great injustice."

C. Kindness and Respect for Parents (Verses 14-15)

Emphasizing the sacrifices of mothers, these verses enjoin kindness to parents, while also clarifying that obedience to Allah takes precedence if parents command Shirk.

*   14. And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.

*   15. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.

D. Allah's Omniscience and Accountability (Verse 16)

Luqman reminds his son that Allah is aware of every deed, no matter how small or hidden, and will bring it to account.

*   16. [And Luqman said], "O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted."

E. Establishing Prayer, Enjoining Good, Forbidding Evil, and Patience (Verse 17)

These are fundamental duties for a believer, requiring steadfastness and resolve.

*   17. O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.

F. Humility and Modesty in Conduct (Verses 18-19)

Luqman advises against arrogance, boastfulness, and discourteous behavior, advocating for moderation and a lowered voice.

*   18. And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

*   19. And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."

### VI. Humanity's Response to Divine Guidance and Allah's Bounties (Verses 20-22)

This section highlights Allah's abundant favors upon humanity and contrasts those who dispute without knowledge with those who submit fully to Allah.

*   20. Do you not see that Allah has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening book [from Him].

*   21. And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers." Even if Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze?

*   22. And whoever submits his face to Allah while he is a doer of good - then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold. And to Allah will be the outcome of [all] matters.

### VII. Consolation Regarding Disbelievers and Their Temporary Enjoyment (Verses 23-24)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) is consoled not to be grieved by disbelief, as the disbelievers' enjoyment is temporary and their ultimate return is to Allah for reckoning.

*   23. And whoever disbelieves - let not his disbelief grieve you. To Us is their return, and We will inform them of what they did. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts.

*   24. We grant them enjoyment for a little; then We will force them to a massive punishment.

### VIII. Allah's Absolute Sovereignty, Knowledge, and Power (Verses 25-30)

These verses reaffirm Allah's absolute dominion over all creation, His infinite knowledge, and His power, challenging any notion of partnership or limitation.

*   25. And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth?" they would surely say, "Allah." Say, "[All] praise is [due] to Allah"; but most of them do not know.

*   26. To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. Indeed, Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.

*   27. And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven [more] seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might, Wise.

*   28. Your creation and your resurrection will not be but as [that of] a single soul. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.

*   29. Do you not see that Allah causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term, and that Allah, with whatever you do, is Acquainted?

*   30. That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand.

### IX. Human Ingratitude Despite Allah's Mercy (Verses 31-32)

The Surah illustrates human nature: turning to Allah in times of distress at sea, but becoming neglectful or ungrateful once delivered to safety.

*   31. Do you not see that ships sail through the sea by the favor of Allah that He may show you of His signs? Indeed, in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

*   32. And when waves cover them like canopies, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, there are [some] of them who are moderate [in faith]. And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous and ungrateful.

### X. Final Admonition: The Day of Judgment and Allah's Exclusive Knowledge (Verses 33-34)

The Surah concludes with a powerful reminder of the Day of Judgment, urging piety and warning against worldly delusions. It emphasizes that certain knowledge, including the Hour, rests exclusively with Allah.

*   33. O mankind, fear your Lord and fear a Day when no father will avail his son, nor will a son avail his father at all. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and be not deceived about Allah by the Deceiver.

*   34. Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

Theme 1: Divine Guidance and the Quran’s Authority

This theme emphasizes the Quran as a source of guidance and wisdom for those who believe and act righteously.

  • Verses 2-5“These are verses of the wise Book, as guidance and mercy for the doers of good who establish prayer and give zakah, and they, of the Hereafter, are certain [in faith]. Those are on [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.”
  • Explanation: The Surah begins by affirming the Quran’s role as a Book of Wisdom that offers mercy and direction to those who follow its teachings through prayer, charity, and firm belief in the afterlife. It sets the tone for the importance of divine guidance as the foundation for a successful life.

This opening establishes the Quran’s purpose and links belief with action, a recurring idea throughout the Surah. It addresses believers directly, promising success to those who adhere to its principles.

Theme 2: The Folly of Disbelief and Arrogance

This theme warns against rejecting faith and highlights the consequences of arrogance and misguidance.

  • Verses 6-7“And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment. And when our verses are recited to him, he turns away arrogantly as if he had not heard them, as if there was in his ears deafness. So give him tidings of a painful punishment.”
  • Explanation: These verses critique those who prioritize idle talk or distractions over divine truth, leading others astray. The punishment for such arrogance and mockery of the Quran is severe, underscoring the seriousness of rejecting guidance.

This section serves as a cautionary note early in the Surah, contrasting the path of the righteous with those who choose disbelief. It highlights how arrogance blinds individuals to truth, a theme that connects to later discussions of accountability.

Theme 3: The Power and Oneness of Allah (Tawheed)

A central theme in Surah Luqman is the recognition of Allah’s supreme power, knowledge, and uniqueness, urging believers to worship Him alone.

  • Verses 10-11“He created the heavens without pillars that you see and has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with you, and dispersed therein from every creature. And We sent down rain from the sky and made grow therein [plants] of every noble kind. This is the creation of Allah. So show Me what those other than Him have created. Rather, the wrongdoers are in clear error.”
  • Verses 25-26“And if you asked them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they would surely say, ‘Allah.’ Say, ‘[All] praise is [due] to Allah’; but most of them do not know. To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. Indeed, Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.”
  • Verses 27-29“And if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven [more] seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. Your creation and your resurrection will not be but as that of a single soul. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing.”
  • Explanation: These verses vividly illustrate Allah’s creative power and sovereignty over all existence, from the heavens to the earth and every creature within it. They challenge polytheists to recognize that no one else can claim such creation, affirming Tawheed (the oneness of Allah). The imagery of endless seas of ink failing to capture Allah’s words emphasizes His infinite knowledge and might.

This theme is foundational to the Surah, reinforcing that true wisdom begins with acknowledging Allah’s uniqueness and submitting to Him. It also serves as a reminder of His ability to resurrect and judge, linking to themes of accountability.

Theme 4: Luqman’s Wisdom and Advice to His Son

This theme focuses on the wise counsel of Luqman, a figure celebrated for his God-given wisdom, particularly in his advice to his son, which serves as a model for righteous living.

  • Verses 12-19:
    • “And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], ‘Be grateful to Allah.’ And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] – then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.” (v. 12)
    • “And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, ‘O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with Him] is great injustice.’” (v. 13)
    • “O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.” (v. 16)
    • “O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” (v. 17)
    • “And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.” (v. 18)
    • “And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys.” (v. 19)
  • Explanation: Luqman’s advice covers core Islamic principles: gratitude to Allah, avoiding shirk (associating partners with Allah), awareness of divine accountability, and upholding moral duties like prayer and enjoining good. He also emphasizes personal character, advising humility, patience, and moderation in behavior and speech. These teachings are timeless, presenting a practical guide for ethical living.

Luqman’s focus on shirk as a grave injustice highlights the centrality of Tawheed in his wisdom, echoing the earlier theme of Allah’s oneness. His counsel balances spiritual obligations with interpersonal conduct, making it a comprehensive framework for a believer’s life.

Theme 5: Parental Rights and Obedience

This theme addresses the importance of honoring parents while clarifying the limits of obedience when it conflicts with faith in Allah.

  • Verses 14-15“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.”
  • Explanation: These verses highlight the immense sacrifices of parents, especially the mother, and command gratitude and kindness toward them as a religious duty. However, obedience to parents is not absolute; if they urge disbelief or shirk, one must prioritize faith in Allah while still maintaining respectful treatment. This balance reflects the Quran’s nuanced approach to family dynamics.

This teaching connects to Luqman’s advice by reinforcing moral duties within relationships, while also upholding the primacy of divine obedience over human ties.

Theme 6: Signs of Allah in Nature and Human Reflection

This theme encourages contemplation of Allah’s signs in the natural world as a means to strengthen faith and understanding.

  • Verses 20-21“Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him]. And when it is said to them, ‘Follow what Allah has revealed,’ they say, ‘Rather, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers.’ Even if Satan was inviting them to the punishment of the Blaze?”
  • Verses 30-31“That is because Allah is the Truth, and that what they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand. Do you not see that ships sail through the sea by the favor of Allah that He may show you of His signs? Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.”
  • Explanation: These verses urge reflection on the natural world—such as the seas, ships, and Allah’s bounties—as evidence of His power and truth. They contrast this with the stubbornness of those who reject revelation and cling to ancestral traditions, even when misguided. The signs in nature are presented as accessible proofs for those who are patient and grateful.

This theme ties into the broader call for wisdom and recognition of Allah’s oneness, encouraging believers to use observation and intellect to affirm their faith rather than blindly following tradition.

Theme 7: Human Weakness and Divine Mercy in Calamity

This theme reflects on human vulnerability and the tendency to turn to Allah in times of distress, often forgetting Him when relief comes.

  • Verses 32-33“And when waves come over them like canopies, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, there are [some] of them who are moderate [in faith]. And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous and ungrateful. O mankind, fear your Lord and fear a Day when no father will avail his son, nor will a son avail his father at all. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth, so let not the worldly life delude you and be not deceived about Allah by the Deceiver.”
  • Explanation: Using the metaphor of a ship in a storm, these verses depict how people often call on Allah desperately in hardship but waver in faith once safety is restored. It serves as a reminder of human ingratitude and the need for consistent devotion. The mention of the Day of Judgment reinforces accountability and the futility of worldly attachments.

This theme connects human behavior to divine mercy and judgment, urging sincerity in faith beyond moments of crisis.

Theme 8: Allah’s Ultimate Knowledge and the Unseen

The final theme underscores that true knowledge of the unseen belongs to Allah alone, emphasizing human limitations.

  • Verse 34“Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.”
  • Explanation: This concluding verse lists five aspects of the unseen—knowledge of the Hour (Judgment Day), rain, what is in wombs, future earnings, and place of death—that are exclusive to Allah. It humbles humanity by reminding us of our dependence on divine wisdom and the limits of our understanding.

This theme closes the Surah by reinforcing Allah’s supreme knowledge, echoing Luqman’s teachings about accountability and submission to Allah’s will.
