Surah Najm

Oath and Divine Revelation (Verses 1-12).
  1. By the star when it sets,
  2. Your companion has not gone astray, nor has he erred,
  3. Nor does he speak out of desire.
  4. It is but a revelation revealed,
  5. Taught to him by one mighty in power,
  6. Endowed with strength, established in form,
  7. While he was in the highest horizon.
  8. Then he approached and came closer,
  9. Until he was two bow-lengths away or nearer.
  10. Then He revealed to His servant what He revealed.
  11. The heart did not lie about what it saw.
  12. Will you then dispute with him about what he saw?

Condemnation of Misguidance and Idolatry (Verses 13-30).
  1. And indeed, he saw him at another descent,
  2. Near the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary,
  3. Near it is the Garden of Refuge.
  4. When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered it,
  5. His sight did not waver, nor did it stray.
  6. Indeed, he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
  7. Have you then considered Al-Lat and Al-Uzza,
  8. And Manat, the third, the other?
  9. Are the males for you and for Him the females?
  10. That, then, is an unjust division.
  11. They are but names you and your forefathers have named, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow nothing but assumption and what their souls desire, even though guidance has come to them from their Lord.
  12. Or is there for man whatever he wishes?
  13. Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first life.
  14. And how many angels are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except after Allah has permitted it to whom He wills and approves?
  15. Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels with female names.
  16. But they have no knowledge of it. They follow nothing but assumption, and indeed, assumption avails nothing against the truth.
  17. So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our reminder and desires nothing but the life of this world.
  18. That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.

Allah’s Sovereignty and Human Accountability (Verses 31-44).
  1. And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, that He may recompense those who do evil with what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best.
  2. Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, except the small faults—indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim purity for yourselves; He is most knowing of who fears Him.
  3. Have you seen the one who turned away
  4. And gave a little and then withheld?
  5. Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so that he sees?
  6. Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses,
  7. And of Abraham, who fulfilled his obligations?
  8. That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another,
  9. And that there is not for man except that for which he strives,
  10. And that his effort will be seen,
  11. Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense,
  12. And that to your Lord is the final destination,
  13. And that it is He who makes laugh and weep,
  14. And that it is He who causes death and gives life,

Divine Power and Warning to Disbelievers (Verses 45-62).
  1. And that He creates the two mates—the male and female—
  2. From a sperm-drop when it is emitted,
  3. And that upon Him is the next creation,
  4. And that it is He who enriches and suffices,
  5. And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius,
  6. And that He destroyed the first ‘Aad,
  7. And Thamud, sparing none,
  8. And the people of Noah before—indeed, they were more unjust and more transgressing.
  9. And the overturned towns He brought down,
  10. So there covered them that which covered.
  11. Then which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?
  12. This is a warner like the former warners.
  13. The Approaching Day has drawn near,
  14. None besides Allah can remove it.
  15. Then do you wonder at this statement?
  16. And you laugh and do not weep,
  17. While you are distracted?
  18. So prostrate to Allah and worship Him.
