Apocalypse of Moses or Life of Adam and Eve (Translated from Greek version) xAI

6:13 PM | BY ZeroDivide EDIT

Prologue.

The narrative and life of Adam and Eve, the first-created, revealed by God to His servant Moses when he received the tablets of the law of the covenant from the hand of the Lord, taught by the archangel Michael.
This is the narrative of Adam and Eve.
After they departed from paradise, Adam took his wife Eve and went up to the east. And they remained there for eighteen years and two months,
and Eve conceived and bore two sons, Diaphotos, called Cain, and Amilabes, called Abel.
And after this, Adam and Eve were together; and while they were sleeping, Eve said to her lord Adam:
My lord, I saw in a dream this night the blood of my son Amilabes, called Abel, being poured into the mouth of Cain his brother, and he drank it mercilessly. And he begged him to leave him a little of it,
but he did not listen to him, but swallowed it all; and it did not remain in his stomach, but came out of his mouth.
And Adam said to Eve: Let us arise and go see what has happened to them, lest the enemy is warring against them.
And both went and found Abel murdered by the hand of his brother Cain.
And God said to the archangel Michael: Say to Adam: ‘Do not reveal the mystery you know to Cain your son, for he is a son of wrath. But do not grieve, for I will give you another son in his place, who will show you all that you should do. But you, say nothing to him.’
These things God said to His angel, and Adam kept the word in his heart, and with him Eve, having sorrow for their son Abel.
And after this, Adam knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Seth.
And Adam said to Eve: Behold, we have begotten a son in place of Abel, whom Cain killed; let us give glory and sacrifice to God.
And Adam begot thirty sons and thirty daughters.
And falling into illness, he cried out with a loud voice and said: Let all my sons come to me, that I may see them before I die.
And all were gathered, for the earth was inhabited in three regions;
and all came to the door of the house where Adam entered to pray to God. And Seth his son said: Father Adam, what is your illness?
And he said: My children, great pain holds me. And they said: What is pain and illness?
And Seth answered and said to him: Father, did you perhaps remember the things you ate in paradise and grieve, longing for them?
If this is so, tell me, and I will go and bring you fruit from paradise. For I will place dung on my head and weep and pray, and the Lord will hear me and send His angel, and I will bring it to you so that your pain may cease.
Adam said to him: No, my son Seth, but I have illness and pain. Seth said to him: And how did this come to you?
And Adam said to him: When God made us, me and your mother, through whom I also die, He gave us every plant in paradise, but about one He commanded us not to eat from it, through which we also die.
And the hour came for the angels guarding your mother to go up and worship the Lord; and the enemy gave to her, and she ate from the tree, knowing that I was not near her, nor the holy angels.
Then she gave to me also to eat.
And when we both ate, God was angry with us. And the Master came into paradise and set His throne and called with a fearful voice, saying: Adam, where are you? And why do you hide from my face? Can a house be hidden from the one who built it?
And He said: Since you abandoned my covenant, I have brought upon your body seventy plagues. The first plague’s pain is the violation of the eyes; the second plague’s pain is of the hearing; and so, in succession, all the plagues will follow you.
And saying these things to his sons, Adam groaned greatly and said: What shall I do? I am in great sorrow.
And Eve wept, saying: My lord Adam, arise, give me half of your illness, and I will bear it, for because of me this has happened to you, because of me you are in labors and pains.
And Adam said to Eve: Arise and go with our son Seth near paradise, and put earth on your heads and weep, entreating God to have compassion on me and send His angel to paradise to give me from the tree from which the oil flows, and you bring it to me, and I will anoint myself and rest. And I will show you the way in which we were deceived before.
And Seth and Eve went to the regions of paradise. And as they went, Eve saw her son and a beast fighting him.
And Eve wept, saying: Woe, woe! If I come to the day of the resurrection, all who have sinned will curse me, saying that Eve did not keep the commandment of God.
And Eve cried out to the beast, saying: O you evil beast, do you not fear to fight the image of God? How has your mouth opened? How have your teeth grown strong? How have you forgotten your submission, that before you were subject to the image of God?
Then the beast cried out, saying:
O Eve, your greed and your weeping are not against us, but against you, since the beginning of the beasts came from you.
How did your mouth open to eat from the tree about which God commanded you not to eat? Because of this, our nature also was changed.
Now, therefore, you will not be able to bear it if I begin to rebuke you.
And Seth said to the beast: Close your mouth and be silent, and depart from the image of God until the day of judgment.
Then the beast said to Seth: Behold, I depart, Seth, from the image of God. Then the beast fled and left him wounded and went to his tent.
And Seth went with his mother Eve near paradise; and they wept there, entreating God to send His angel and give them the oil of mercy.
And God sent to them Michael the archangel, and he said to them these words: Seth, man of God, do not weary yourself praying with this supplication about the tree from which the oil flows to anoint your father Adam; for it will not happen to you now,
but in the last times. Then all flesh from Adam until that great day will be raised, as many as will be a holy people;
then every joy of paradise will be given to them, and God will be in their midst;
and there will no longer be sinners before Him, for the evil heart will be taken from them, and a heart understanding the good and serving God alone will be given to them.
Because the measure of his life has been fulfilled, equal to three days, and as his soul goes out, you will behold its fearful ascent.
And having said these things, the angel departed from them. Seth and Eve came to the tent where Adam lay.
And Adam said to Eve: What have you done to us? You have brought upon us great wrath, which is death.
And he said to her: Call all our children and the children of our children, and tell them the manner of our transgression.
Then Eve said to them: Hear, all my children and the children of my children, and I will tell you how our enemy deceived us.
It came to pass that while we were guarding paradise, each of us guarded the portion allotted to him by God;
I guarded in my portion the south and west. But the devil went to Adam’s portion, where the male animals were; since God divided the animals for us, and He gave all the male animals to your father, and all the female animals to me, and each of us kept his own.
And the devil spoke to the serpent, saying: Arise, come to me, and I will tell you a word by which you will be profited.
Then the serpent came to him, and the devil said to him:
I hear that you are wiser than all the beasts, and I have come to observe you; I found you greater than all the beasts, and they converse with you; yet you worship the lesser. Why do you eat from the weeds of Adam and his wife and not from the fruit of paradise? Arise and come, and let us make him be cast out from paradise through his wife, as we also were cast out because of him.
The serpent said to him: I fear lest the Lord be angry with me.
The devil said to him: Do not fear; only become my vessel, and I will speak through your mouth a word by which you will be able to deceive him.
And immediately he hung himself from the walls of paradise about the hour when the angels of God went up to worship.
Then Satan became in the form of an angel and sang hymns to God like the angels; and I, leaning over the wall, saw him like an angel. And he said to me: Are you Eve? And I said to him: I am.
And he said to me: What are you doing in paradise? And I said to him: God placed us to guard and eat from it.
The devil answered me through the mouth of the serpent: You do well, but you do not eat from every plant.
And I said to him: Yes, we eat from every plant except one only, which is in the midst of paradise, about which God commanded us not to eat from it, lest we die with death.
Then the serpent said to me: As God lives, I am grieved for you, for you are like cattle. For I do not want you to be ignorant of this, but arise, come here, listen to me, and eat, and understand the value of the tree.
And I said to him: I fear lest God be angry with me, as He told us.
And he said to me: Do not fear; for as soon as you eat, your eyes will be opened, and you will be as gods in knowing what is good and what is evil.
But God, knowing this, that you will be like Him, envied you and said: You shall not eat from it.
But you, look closely at the plant, and you will see great glory around it. And I looked closely at the plant and saw great glory around it.
And I said to him that it is beautiful to the eyes to behold, and I feared to take from the fruit. And he said to me: Come, I will give it to you; follow me.
And I opened to him, and he entered inside paradise and passed before me. And having walked a little, he turned and said to me:
I have changed my mind and will not give you to eat. These things he said, wishing to entice and destroy me completely. And he said to me: Swear to me that you will give also to your husband. And I said to him that I do not know by what oath I shall swear to you, but what I know, I say to you:
By the throne of the Master and the cherubim and the tree of life, I will give also to my husband to eat. And when he had taken the oath from me, then he came and climbed upon it; and he placed upon the fruit, which he gave me to eat, the venom of his wickedness, that is, his desire; for desire is the head of every sin. And I bent the branch to the earth and took from the fruit and ate.
And in that hour my eyes were opened, and I knew that I was naked of the righteousness with which I had been clothed.
And I wept, saying: Why have you done this to me, that I have been alienated from my glory with which I was clothed?
And I wept also about the oath. And he descended from the plant and became invisible.
And I sought in my portion leaves to cover my shame, and I found none from the plants of paradise, because as soon as I ate, the leaves of all the plants in my portion fell off, except for the fig tree alone.
And taking leaves from it, I made myself garments, and they were from those plants from which I ate.
And I cried out with a loud voice, saying: Adam, Adam, where are you? Arise, come to me, and I will show you a great mystery.
And when your father came, I spoke to him words of lawlessness, which brought us down from great glory.
For as soon as he came, I opened my mouth, and the devil spoke, and I began to admonish him, saying: Come, my lord Adam, listen to me and eat from the fruit of the tree, which God told us not to eat from, and you will be as God.
And your father answered and said: I fear lest God be angry with me.
And I said to him: Do not fear; for as soon as you eat, you will know good and evil. And then, quickly persuading him, he ate, and his eyes were opened, and he also knew his nakedness.
And he said to me: O wicked woman, what have you done to us? You have alienated me from the glory of God.
And in that hour we heard the archangel Michael sounding his trumpet, calling the angels, saying:
Thus says the Lord: Come with me to paradise and hear the word by which I judge Adam.
And as we heard the archangel sounding, we said: Behold, God is coming to paradise to judge us. And we were afraid and hid. And God went up to paradise, riding upon a chariot of cherubim, and the angels singing hymns to Him. When God entered paradise, all the plants of Adam’s portion and my portion bloomed and were established,
and the throne of God was prepared where the tree of life was.
And God called Adam, saying: Adam, where have you hidden, thinking that I will not find you? Can a house be hidden from the one who built it?
Then your father answered and said: Not, Lord, do we hide thinking that we are not found by You, but I am afraid, for I am naked, and I was ashamed of Your power, Master.
God said to him: Who showed you that you are naked, unless you abandoned my commandment which I gave you to keep?
Then Adam remembered the word which I spoke to him when I wished to deceive him, that I will make you safe before God; and turning to me, he said to me: Why have you done this?
And I said that the serpent deceived me.
God said to Adam: Since you disobeyed my commandment and listened to your wife, cursed is the earth in your works.
For when you work it, it will not give its strength; thorns and thistles will spring up for you, and by the sweat of your face you will eat your bread. You will be in manifold labors; you will toil and not rest, afflicted by bitterness, and not taste sweetness,
afflicted by heat and constricted by cold; and you will labor much and not grow rich, and you will grow fat and in the end not exist,
and the animals over which you ruled will rise against you in disorder, because you did not keep my commandment.
And the Lord turned to me and said to me: Since you listened to the serpent and disobeyed my commandment,
you will be in vanities and unbearable pains; you will bear children in many tremors, and in one hour you will come and lose your life from your great need and pains.
And you will confess and say: Lord, Lord, save me, and I will not return to the sin of the flesh.
And for this reason, I will judge you by your word, because of the enmity which the enemy placed in you; and you will turn again to your husband, and he will rule over you.
And after saying these things to me, He said to the serpent in great anger, saying to him: Since you did this and became an ungrateful vessel to deceive those who were slack in heart, cursed are you among all beasts;
you will be deprived of the food you ate, and you will eat dust all the days of your life;
on your breast and belly you will go, and you will be deprived of your hands and feet; neither ear nor wing nor any member of all those you enticed in your wickedness and caused to be cast out from paradise will be left to you;
and I will put enmity between you and his seed; he will crush your head, and you his heel, until the day of judgment.
And having said these things, He commanded His angels to cast us out from paradise.
And as we were being driven out and lamenting, your father Adam entreated the angels, saying: Allow me a little so that I may entreat God, and He may have compassion and pity me, for I alone have sinned.
And they ceased driving him; and Adam cried out with weeping, saying: Forgive me, Lord, what I have done.
Then the Lord said to His angels: Why have you ceased driving Adam out of paradise? Is the sin mine, or have I judged wrongly?
Then the angels, falling to the ground, worshipped the Lord, saying: You are just, Lord, and you judge rightly.
And the Lord turned to Adam and said: I will not allow you from now on to be in paradise.
And Adam answered and said: Lord, give me from the plant of life so that I may eat before I am cast out.
Then the Lord spoke to Adam: You will not take from it now; for it was appointed to the cherubim and the flaming sword that turns to guard it because of you, so that you may not taste of it and be immortal forever,
for you have the war which the enemy placed in you. But when you go out from paradise, if you guard yourself from all evil as one wishing to die, when the resurrection comes again, I will raise you, and then it will be given to you from the tree of life, and you will be immortal forever.
And having said these things, the Lord commanded us to be cast out from paradise,
and your father wept before the angels opposite paradise, and the angels said to him: What do you want us to do for you, Adam?
And your father answered and said to the angels: Behold, you cast me out; I beg you, allow me to take fragrances from paradise, so that after I go out, I may offer a sacrifice to God, that God may hear me.
And the angels approached and said to God: Jael, eternal King, command that fragrant incenses from paradise be given to Adam.
And God commanded Adam to come so that he might take fragrant aromas from paradise for his sustenance.
And the angels let him go, and he gathered both kinds, saffron and spikenard and reed and cinnamon and other seeds for his sustenance, and taking these, he went out from paradise.
And we came to be upon the earth.
Now, therefore, my children, I have shown you the way in which we were deceived; but you, guard yourselves not to abandon the good.
And having said these things among her sons, while Adam was sleeping in his illness, and he had one more day to go out from the body, Eve said to Adam:
Why do you die, and I live? Or how much time do I have to spend after you die? Tell me.
Then Adam said to Eve: Do not wish to be concerned about matters; for you will not delay after me, but we both die equally, and you will be placed in my place. And when I die, anoint me, and let no one touch me until the angel of the Lord speaks something about me;
for God will not forget me, but will seek His own vessel which He formed. Arise rather and pray to God until I give up my spirit into the hands of the One who gave it; for we do not know how we will meet the One who made us, whether He will be angry with us or turn to have mercy on us.
Then Eve arose and went outside, and falling to the ground, she said:
I have sinned, O God, I have sinned, O Father of all, I have sinned against You, I have sinned against Your chosen angels, I have sinned against the cherubim, I have sinned against Your unshakable throne, I have sinned, Lord, I have sinned much, I have sinned before You, and every sin in creation has come about through me.
And while Eve was still praying on her knees, behold, the angel of humanity came to her and raised her, saying:
Arise, Eve, from your repentance; for behold, Adam your husband has gone out from his body, arise and see his spirit being carried up to the One who made it to meet Him.
And Eve arose and placed her hand on her face, and the angel said to her: Lift yourself from earthly things.
And Eve gazed into heaven and saw a chariot of light coming under four bright eagles, whose glory no one born of a womb could describe nor see their face, and angels going before the chariot.
When they came to the place where your father Adam lay, the chariot stood still, and the seraphim between the father and the chariot.
And I saw golden censers and three vials, and behold, all the angels with frankincense and the censers and the vials came to the altar and blew them, and the vapor of the incense covered the firmaments.
And the angels fell down and worshipped God, crying and saying: Jael, Holy One, forgive, for he is Your image and the work of Your holy hands.
And again I, Eve, saw two great and fearful mysteries standing before God. And I wept from fear and cried out to my son Seth, saying:
Arise, Seth, from the body of your father Adam and come to me, that you may see what no eye has ever seen, and they are praying for your father Adam.
Then Seth arose and came to his mother and said to her: What is it with you? And why do you weep?
She said to him: Look up with your eyes and see the seven firmaments opened, and see with your eyes how the body of your father lies on its face, and all the holy angels with him praying for him and saying: Forgive him, O Father of all, for he is Your image.
What, then, my child Seth, will this be? And when will he be delivered into the hands of our invisible Father and God?
And who are the two dark ones standing at the prayer for your father?
And Seth said to his mother: These are the sun and the moon, and they, falling down, are praying for my father Adam.
Eve said to him: And where is their light, and why have they become blackened?
And Seth said to her: They cannot shine before the light of all, and for this reason their light was hidden from them.
And while Seth was saying these things to his mother, the angels lying on their faces sounded trumpets and cried with a fearful voice, saying:
Blessed is the glory of the Lord upon His works; He has had mercy on the creation of His hands, Adam.
When the angels had sounded these things, one of the six-winged seraphim came and snatched Adam to the Acherusian lake and washed him before God.
And he lay there for three hours, and thus the Master of all, sitting on His holy throne, stretched out His hands and raised Adam and delivered him to the archangel Michael, saying to him:
Take him to paradise up to the third heaven, and leave him there until that great and fearful day which I am about to arrange for the world.
And Michael the archangel, taking Adam, went and left him, as God said to him at the forgiveness of Adam.
After all these things, the archangel entreated concerning the burial of the remains;
and God commanded all the angels to come before Him, each according to his order. And all the angels were gathered, some having censers, others trumpets;
and the Lord of hosts went up, and the winds drew Him, and cherubim rising above the winds, and the angels of heaven going before Him; and coming where the body of Adam was, they took it.
And they came to paradise, and all the plants of paradise were moved, so that all born from Adam fell asleep from the fragrance, except Seth, because he was born according to God’s decree.
Thus, the body of Adam lay on the ground in paradise, and Seth was greatly grieved over it.
And the Lord God said: Adam, why have you done this? If you had kept my commandment, those who brought you to this place would not have rejoiced.
But I say to you that I will turn their joy into sorrow, and your sorrow I will turn into joy, and returning, I will set you in your dominion upon the throne of the one who deceived you;
and he will be cast into this place, that you may sit above him. Then he and those who listened to him will be condemned, and they will be greatly grieved and will weep, seeing you sitting on his honorable throne.
And then He spoke to the archangel Michael:
Go to paradise in the third heaven and bring me three linen and silk cloths. And God said to Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael: Cover the body of Adam with the cloths, and bringing oil of the fragrant oil, pour it upon him. And doing so, they buried his body.
And the Lord said: Let the body of Abel also be brought. And bringing other cloths, they buried him,
since he was unburied from the day his brother Cain murdered him. For the wicked Cain, taking great pains to hide it, could not; for the earth did not receive it, saying:
I will not receive another body until the dust taken from me and formed comes to me. And then angels, taking it up, placed it on the rock until his father died,
and both were buried according to God’s command in the regions of paradise, in the place where God found the dust.
And God sent seven angels to paradise, and they brought many fragrances and placed them in the earth; and thus they took the two bodies and buried them in the place they dug and built.
And God called Adam and said: Adam, Adam? And the body answered from the earth and said: Here I am, Lord.
And the Lord said to him: I told you that you are dust, and to dust you will return.
Again I promise you the resurrection; I will raise you in the last day in the resurrection with every man from your seed.
And after these words, God made a triangular seal and sealed the tomb, so that no one might do anything to it in the six days, until his rib returns to him.
And the philanthropic God and His holy angels were placed in His place.
And after the six days, Eve also died. And while she lived, she wept about her falling asleep because she did not know where her body would be placed. For when the Lord was in paradise when they buried Adam, she and her children were asleep except Seth, as I said.
And Eve entreated in the hour of her death that she might be buried where Adam her husband was, saying thus:
My Master, Lord, and God of all virtue, do not alienate me, Your servant, from the body of Adam; for from his members You made me;
but deem me worthy, even me, the unworthy and sinful, to be buried with his body.
As I was with him in paradise and after the transgression inseparable, so let no one separate us.
And after praying, looking up to heaven, she arose, striking her breast and saying: God of all, receive my spirit. And immediately she delivered her spirit to God.
And when she died, the archangel Michael came to assist, and three angels came and took her body and buried it where the body of Abel was.
And the archangel Michael said to Seth: Thus bury every man who dies until the day of the resurrection.
And after giving this law, he said to him: Do not mourn beyond six days. But on the seventh day, rest and rejoice in it, for in it God and we the angels rejoice in the passing from earth of a righteous soul.
Having said these things, the archangel Michael went up to heaven, glorifying and saying the alleluia,
Holy, holy, holy Lord, to the glory of God the Father, for to Him is due glory, honor, and worship with His unoriginate and life-giving Spirit, now and always and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Holy, holy, holy Lord of hosts, for His is the power and the glory to the ages of ages. Amen.
And the archangel Joel glorified the Lord, saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, heaven and earth are full of His glory.
