The Gospel of the Egyptians
Translated by Alexander Bohlig and Frederik Wisse
Translated by Alexander Bohlig and Frederik Wisse
The holy book of the Egyptians speaks of the great invisible Spirit, the Father whose name cannot be spoken. He emerged from the heights of perfection, the light of the light of the aeons of light, the light of the silence of providence and the Father of silence, the light of the word and truth, the light of the incorruptions, the infinite light, the radiance from the aeons of light of the unrevealable, unmarked, ageless, unproclaimable Father, the aeon of the aeons, Autogenes, self-begotten, self-producing, alien, the truly real aeon.
Three powers emerged from him: the Father, the Mother, and the Son, arising from the living silence, coming forth from the incorruptible Father. These emerged from the silence of the unknown Father.
From that place, Domedon Doxomedon appeared, the aeon of the aeons and the light of each of their powers. Thus, the Son came forth fourth, the Mother fifth, the Father sixth. He was unheralded, the one unmarked among all the powers, glories, and incorruptions.
From that place, the three powers emerged, the three ogdoads that the Father brings forth in silence with his providence from his bosom—namely, the Father, the Mother, and the Son.
The first ogdoad, from which the thrice-male child emerged, includes thought, word, incorruption, eternal life, will, mind, and foreknowledge, the androgynous Father.
The second ogdoad-power, the Mother, the virginal Barbelon, who presides over heaven, is the uninterpretable power, the ineffable Mother. She originated from herself, came forth, and united with the Father of the silent silence.
The third ogdoad-power, the Son of the silent silence, is the crown of the silent silence, the glory of the Father, and the virtue of the Mother. He brings forth from the bosom the seven powers of the great light of the seven voices. The word completes them.
These are the three powers, the three ogdoads that the Father, through his providence, brought forth from his bosom. He produced them at that place.
Domedon Doxomedon emerged, the aeon of the aeons, with the throne within him and the powers surrounding him, the glories and incorruptions. The Father of the great light, who came forth from the silence, is the great Doxomedon-aeon, where the thrice-male child rests. The throne of his glory was established there, the one on which his unrevealable name is inscribed, on the tablet where the word resides, the Father of the light of everything, who emerged from the silence while resting in the silence, his name held in an invisible symbol. A hidden, invisible mystery came forth:
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
And so, the three powers praised the great, invisible, unnameable, virginal, uncallable Spirit and his male virgin. They requested a power. A silence of living silence emerged, bringing glories and incorruptions in the aeons, myriads added on, the three males, the three male offspring, the male races, filling the great Doxomedon-aeon with the power of the word of the whole pleroma.
Then the thrice-male child of the great Christ, anointed by the great invisible Spirit—whose power was called Ainon—praised the great invisible Spirit and his male virgin Yoel, the silence of silent silence, and the ineffable greatness. The first to come forth, unproclaimable and wonderful, he holds all the greatnesses of the silence at that place. The thrice-male child offered praise and sought a power from the great, invisible, virginal Spirit.
Then there appeared at that place one who sees glories, treasures, and invisible mysteries of the silence, the male virgin Youel.
Then the child of the child, Esephech, appeared.
And so he was completed: the Father, the Mother, the Son, the five seals, the unconquerable power who is the great Christ of all the incorruptible ones.
Holy was the end, the incorruptible ones and their powers, glories, and incorruptions. They emerged.
This one praised the unrevealable, hidden mystery and the hidden.
He rested in the aeons, thrones, and myriads of powers without number surrounding them, glories and incorruptions of the Father, the Mother, the Son, the whole pleroma mentioned earlier, the five seals, and the mystery of mysteries. They appeared.
One presides over the aeons, truly eternal.
Then providence emerged from silence, with the living silence of the Spirit, the Word of the Father, and a light. She revealed the five seals that the Father brought forth from his bosom, passing through all the aeons mentioned before. She established thrones of glory and myriads of angels without number who surrounded them, powers and incorruptible glories, singing and giving glory, all praising with a single voice, in one accord, with a never-silent voice to the Father, the Mother, the Son, and all the pleromas mentioned before. This is the great Christ from silence, the incorruptible child Telmael Telmachael Eli Eli Machar Machar Seth, the truly living power, with the male virgin Youel, Esephech, the holder of glory, the child of the child, the crown of his glory, the five seals, and the pleroma mentioned earlier.
There, the great self-begotten living Word emerged, the true god, the unborn physis, whose name I shall speak, saying that he is the son of the great Christ, born of the ineffable silence, who came forth from the great invisible and incorruptible Spirit. The son of silence and silence appeared.
An invisible man and the treasures of his glory emerged. Then he appeared revealed and established the four aeons with a word.
He praised the great, invisible, virginal Spirit, the silence of the Father, in a silence of the living silence of silence, the place where the man rests.
Then, from that place, the cloud of the great light emerged, the living power, the mother of the holy, incorruptible ones, the great power, Mirothoe. She gave birth to him whose name I call three times:
IEN IEN EA EA EA
For this one, Adamas, is a light radiating from the light, the eye of the light. He is the first man, through whom and to whom everything came into being, without whom nothing exists. The unknowable, incomprehensible Father descended from above to annul the deficiency.
Then the great Logos, the divine Autogenes, and the incorruptible man Adamas mingled with each other. A Logos of man came into being, though the man emerged through a word.
He praised the great, invisible, incomprehensible, virginal Spirit, the male virgin, the thrice-male child, the male virgin Youel, Esephech, the holder of glory, the child of the child, the crown of his glory, the great Doxomedon-aeon, the thrones within him, the powers surrounding him, the glories and incorruptions, their whole pleroma mentioned earlier, the ethereal earth, the receiver of God where the holy men of the great light take shape, the men of the Father of the silent, living silence, the Father, and their whole pleroma as mentioned before.
The great Logos, the divine Autogenes, and the incorruptible man Adamas offered praise and sought power and eternal strength for the Autogenes to complete the four aeons, so that through them the glory and power of the invisible Father of the holy men of the great light might appear in the world, the image of the night. The incorruptible man Adamas requested a son from himself, so that he might become the father of the immovable, incorruptible race. Through this race, silence and voice would emerge, the dead aeon would rise and dissolve.
Thus, from above came the power of the great light, the Manifestation. She gave birth to the four great lights: Harmozel, Oroiael, Davithe, Eleleth, and the great incorruptible Seth, the son of the incorruptible man Adamas.
And so the perfect hebdomad, existing in hidden mysteries, was completed. When she receives the glory, she becomes eleven ogdoads.
The Father nodded approval, and the whole pleroma of the lights was pleased. Their consorts emerged to complete the ogdoad of the divine Autogenes: Grace with the first light Harmozel, Perception with the second light Oroiael, Understanding with the third light Davithe, Prudence with the fourth light Eleleth. This is the first ogdoad of the divine Autogenes.
The Father nodded approval, and the whole pleroma of the lights was pleased. The ministers emerged: the great Gamaliel with the first great light Harmozel, the great Gabriel with the second great light Oroiael, the great Samlo with the great light Davithe, and the great Abrasax with the great light Eleleth. Their consorts came forth by the Father’s will: Memory with the great Gamaliel, Love with the great Gabriel, Peace with the great Samblo, eternal Life with the great Abrasax. Thus, the five ogdoads were completed, totaling forty, an uninterpretable power.
Then the great Logos, the Autogenes, and the word of the pleroma of the four lights praised the great, invisible, uncallable, virginal Spirit, the male virgin, the great Doxomedon-aeon, the thrones within them, the powers surrounding them, glories, authorities, powers, the thrice-male child, the male virgin Youel, Esephech, the holder of glory, the child of the child, the crown of his glory, the whole pleroma, all the glories there, the infinite pleromas, and the unnameable aeons. They named the Father the fourth with the incorruptible race and called the seed of the Father the seed of the great Seth.
Then everything shook, and trembling seized the incorruptible ones. The three male children descended from above into the unborn ones, the self-begotten ones, and those begotten in what is begotten. The greatness emerged, the whole greatness of the great Christ. He established thrones in glory, myriads without number, in the four aeons around them, with myriads of powers, glories, and incorruptions. They emerged in this way.
The incorruptible, spiritual church grew in the four lights of the great, living Autogenes, the god of truth, praising, singing, and giving glory with one voice, in one accord, with a mouth that never rests, to the Father, the Mother, the Son, and their whole pleroma, as mentioned before. The five seals possessing the myriads, those who rule over the aeons, and those who bear the glory of the leaders were commanded to reveal to those who are worthy. Amen.
Then the great Seth, the son of the incorruptible man Adamas, praised the great, invisible, uncallable, unnameable, virginal Spirit, the male virgin, the thrice-male child, the male virgin Youel, Esephech, the holder of glory, the crown of his glory, the child of the child, the great Doxomedon-aeons, and the pleroma mentioned before. He asked for his seed.
From that place emerged the great power of the great light Plesithea, the mother of the angels, the mother of the lights, the glorious mother, the virgin with four breasts, bearing fruit from Gomorrah as spring and Sodom, the fruit of Gomorrah’s spring within her. She came forth through the great Seth.
Then the great Seth rejoiced over the gift granted him by the incorruptible child. He took his seed from the virgin with four breasts and placed it with him in the fourth aeon, in the third great light Davithe.
After five thousand years, the great light Eleleth spoke: “Let someone reign over the chaos and Hades.” A cloud appeared, named hylic Sophia. She gazed upon the parts of chaos, her face and form like blood. The great angel Gamaliel spoke to the great Gabriel, the minister of the great light Oroiael, saying, “Let an angel emerge to reign over the chaos and Hades.” The cloud, in agreement, emerged in two monads, each with light. She placed a throne in the cloud above. Then Sakla, the great angel, saw the great demon Nebruel beside him. Together, they became a begetting spirit of the earth and produced assisting angels. Sakla said to the great demon Nebruel, “Let twelve aeons come into being in the aeon, worlds.” By the will of the Autogenes, the great angel Sakla declared, “There shall be seven in number.” He instructed the great angels, “Go and let each of you reign over his world.” Each of these twelve angels departed. The first angel is Athoth, whom great generations of men call something else. The second is Harmas, the eye of the fire. The third is Galila. The fourth is Yobel. The fifth is Adonaios, called Sabaoth. The sixth is Cain, whom great generations of men call the sun. The seventh is Abel; the eighth Akiressina; the ninth Yubel. The tenth is Harmupiael. The eleventh is Archir-Adonin. The twelfth is Belias. These preside over Hades and the chaos.
After the world’s founding, Sakla said to his angels, “I am a jealous god, and apart from me nothing has come into being,” trusting in his nature.
A voice came from on high, saying, “The Man exists, and the Son of the Man.” Due to the descent of the image above, resembling its voice in the height of the image that looked out, the first creature was formed.
Because of this, Metanoia came into being. She received her completion and power by the Father’s will and approval for the great, incorruptible, immovable race of the great, mighty men of the great Seth, to sow it in the aeons brought forth, filling the deficiency through her. She descended from above to the world, the image of the night. Upon arriving, she prayed for the repentance of the seed of this aeon’s archon and the authorities from him, the defiled seed of the demon-begetting god destined for destruction, and the seed of Adam and the great Seth, resembling the sun.
Then the great angel Hormos came to prepare, through the virgins of this aeon’s corrupted sowing, in a Logos-begotten, holy vessel, through the holy Spirit, the seed of the great Seth.
The great Seth came and brought his seed, sowing it in the aeons brought forth, their number matching Sodom. Some say Sodom is the pasture of the great Seth, called Gomorrah. Others say the great Seth took his plant from Gomorrah and planted it in a second place, named Sodom.
This is the race that emerged through Edokla. She gave birth through the word to Truth and Justice, the origin of the seed of eternal life, with those who persevere due to their emanation’s knowledge. This is the great, incorruptible race that came forth through three worlds to the world.
The flood came as an example for the aeon’s consummation. It will be sent into the world because of this race. A conflagration will strike the earth. Grace will be with those of the race, through prophets and guardians who protect the race’s life. Because of this race, famines and plagues will occur. These events will happen due to the great, incorruptible race. Temptations, falsehoods, and false prophets will arise because of this race.
The great Seth saw the devil’s activity, his many guises, schemes against his incorruptible, immovable race, and the persecutions by his powers and angels, their error acting against themselves.
Then the great Seth praised the great, uncallable, virginal Spirit, the male virgin Barbelon, the thrice-male child Telmael Telmael Heli Heli Machar Machar Seth, the truly living power, the male virgin Youel, Esephech, the holder of glory and his crown, the great Doxomedon-aeon, the thrones within him, the powers surrounding them, and the whole pleroma mentioned before. He requested guards over his seed.
From the great aeons came four hundred ethereal angels, with the great Aerosiel and Selmechel, to guard the great, incorruptible race, its fruit, and the great men of the great Seth, from the time of Truth and Justice until the aeon’s end and its archons, condemned to death by great judges.
The great Seth was sent by the four lights, by the will of the Autogenes and the whole pleroma, through the gift and good pleasure of the great invisible Spirit, the five seals, and the whole pleroma.
He passed through three parousias mentioned before: the flood, the conflagration, and the judgment of the archons, powers, and authorities, to save the race that strayed, through the world’s reconciliation and baptism in a Logos-begotten body prepared secretly by the great Seth through the virgin. The saints would be begotten by the holy Spirit through invisible, secret symbols, reconciling the world with the world, renouncing the world and the god of thirteen aeons, with the convocations of saints and ineffable ones, the incorruptible bosom, and the great light of the Father who pre-existed with his Providence. He established through her the holy baptism surpassing heaven, through the incorruptible, Logos-begotten one, Jesus the living, whom the great Seth wore. Through him, he nailed the powers of the thirteen aeons, establishing those brought forth and taken away, arming them with knowledge of truth and an unconquerable power of incorruptibility.
The great attendant Yesseus Mazareus Yessedekeus, the living water, appeared to them, with the great leaders James the great, Theopemptos, and Isaouel, who preside over the spring of truth, Micheus, Michar, and Mnesinous, he who presides over the baptism of the living, the purifiers, Sesengenpharanges, those over the gates of the waters, Micheus and Michar, those over the mountain, Seldao and Elainos, and the receivers of the great race, the incorruptible, mighty men of the great Seth. The ministers of the four lights—the great Gamaliel, Gabriel, Samblo, and Abrasax—those over the sun’s rising, Olses, Hypneus, and Heurumaious, and those over the entrance to eternal life’s rest, the rulers Mixanther and Michanor, guarded the souls of the elect, Akramas and Strempsouchos, with the great power Heli Heli Machar Machar Seth, the great invisible, uncallable, unnameable, virginal Spirit, and the silence. The first great light Harmozel, the place of the living Autogenes, the God of truth, with the incorruptible man Adamas, the second, Oroiael, the place of the great Seth, and Jesus, possessor of life, who crucified what is in the law, the third, Davithe, the place of the sons of the great Seth, the fourth, Eleleth, where the souls of the sons rest, and the fifth, Yoel, who presides over the name of him granted to baptize with the holy baptism surpassing heaven, the incorruptible one.
From now on, through the incorruptible man Poimael, those worthy of invocation and the renunciations of the five seals in the spring-baptism will know their receivers as they are taught about them and will be known by them. These will never taste death.

You are what you are, You are who you are!
This great name of yours is upon me, O self-begotten Perfect one, who is not outside me. I see you, O you visible to everyone. For who can comprehend you in another tongue? Now that I have known you, I have mingled with the immutable. I have armed myself with light’s armor; I have become light! The Mother was there for the splendid beauty of grace. Thus, I stretched out my folded hands. I was shaped in the circle of the light’s riches in my bosom, giving form to the many begotten in the light where no complaint reaches. I shall declare your glory truly, for I have comprehended you,
SOU IES IDE AEIO OIS,
O AEON, AEON, O God of Silence!
O AEON, AEON, O God of Silence!
I honor you completely. You are my place of rest, O Son ES ES O E, the formless one in the formless ones, who raises the man in whom you will purify me into your life, according to your imperishable name. The incense of life is in me. I mixed it with water after the model of all archons, so I may live with you in the peace of the saints, you who exist truly forever.
This is the book the great Seth wrote and placed in high mountains where the sun has not risen, nor can it. Since the days of prophets, apostles, and preachers, the name has not risen in their hearts, nor can it. Their ear has not heard it.
The great Seth wrote this book with letters over one hundred and thirty years. He placed it in the mountain called Charaxio, so that, at the end of times and eras, by the will of the divine Autogenes and the whole pleroma, through the gift of untraceable, unthinkable, fatherly love, it may emerge and reveal this incorruptible, holy race of the great savior, those dwelling with them in love, the great, invisible, eternal Spirit, his only-begotten Son, the eternal light, his great, incorruptible consort, the incorruptible Sophia, the Barbelon, and the whole pleroma in eternity. Amen.
The Gospel of the Egyptians. The God-written, holy, secret book. Grace, understanding, perception, and prudence be with him who wrote it—Eugnostos the beloved, in the Spirit—in the flesh, my name is Gongessos—and my fellow lights in incorruptibility. Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, Ichthus. God-written is the holy book of the great, invisible Spirit. Amen.
The Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit.
Amen.
Amen.
