In the USA: Kinder Surprise!
Kids and adults love them, teenagers think they're dumb... They're like Legos for your mouth!
But it turns out the FDA bans "the sale of any candy that has imbedded in it a toy or trinket", which means those chocolate eggs with a surprise toy inside of them cannot be sold or even brought into the US.
In 2011, customs confiscated 60,000 individual eggs from travelers' baggage. These (most likely unknowing) travelers each had to pay a fine of up to $2,500 per egg...

Spiked Hair - Banned in Iran.
They actually circulated a catalogue showing what is acceptable and what's not.
Pokemon
Saudi Arabia banned Pokemon because someone in the government came up with a little theory that Pokemon is part of a Jewish conspiracy to brainwash the world's youth and "promoting Zionism" by depicting six-pointed stars and gambling.

The 6th dildo
It's banned in Texas, US, and a person in possession of 6 or more dildos can be charged with up to a felony.
It's okay to own 5 of them, though.
(For the actual law, see this link We have weird laws, strange laws, and just plain crazy laws! It applies to other toys as well, just that dildos are funnier.)

Here's a strange thing that some American states banned until relatively recently (1967): marrying somebody who the government decided was of a different "racial" group from your own.
Virginia, for example, since the 1920s had barred so-called "colored" and "white" people from marrying. A "colored" woman and a "white" man in Virginia wanted to marry each other, so they tried to avoid the law by marrying in Washington, DC and then returning home to Virginia. Unfortunately, Virginia law also barred interracial couples married elsewhere from living as a married couple in Virginia. Responding to an anonymous tip, police busted them. The law had teeth and the judge did not mess around with the sentencing: the couple were sentenced to a year each in prison (with the sentence suspended on the condition that they leave Virginia, which they did).
The American Civil Liberties Union took their case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that Virginia's law violated the couple's rights under the U.S. Constitution. The unanimous Court, speaking through Chief Justice Earl Warren, wrote that "Marriage is one of the 'basic civil rights of man,' fundamental to our very existence and survival.... To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State's citizens of liberty without due process of law."
And with that, citizens in all states finally had the right to marry people regardless of race.
In the best- and most appropriately-named case in legal history, this case was called Loving v. Virginia after Mildred and Richard Loving, the "colored" (African-American and American Indian, in Mildred's case) and white spouses. Here's the happy couple:
So all Americans acquired the right to marry others regardless of race only in 1967, well within the lifetime of some Quorans and within the lifetime of the parents of others. Not exactly ancient history. Let's never take for granted the fact that with respect to race, at least, Americans don't have to fear the government telling us who we can marry. I'd be curious to hear from Quorans in other countries whether they have the same right.
It's not hard to see why many people today are asking courts and legislatures to follow the reasoning of Loving v. Virginia to extend marital rights next to same-sex couples.

Buckyballs, Zen Magnets, and all neodymium magnetic sets, were crucified in an alarmist 2012 letter by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who urged the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban them because of the possibility of choking.
Note, importantly, that the magnet sets are not marketed as "toys", and are only sold online exclusively for adults, with conspicuous labels warning of their danger to children.
The actual rate of injury is approximately 1 per 100,000 Buckyball sets and less than 1 injury per 21.5 million individual magnet pieces. By comparison, the rates of injury due to dog bites, tennis, skateboarding, or ingestion of poisonous household chemicals are between 100 and 1,000 times higher.

Mein Kampf is banned in Germany
In Germany, the copyright to the text of Hitler’s philosophical text Mein Kampf is still held by the state government of Bavaria. In response to that embarrassing incident in the 1940’s, the Bavarians have refused permission for the book to be printed in Germany since 1945.This ban isn’t long for this world, though, since the Bavarian copyright expires in 2015.

Porn with small boobs: No A-cup porn films are allowed in Australia. Why? Because, lobbying groups argued, men who prefer such films are secretly into child porn. More at @Australia's 'small breast' ban
Greece: Video Games
China's not the only country to ban video games. Greece did too, although for a much different reason. In 2002, the government tried to crack down on electric gambling machines, but their legislators wrote the law so broadly that it managed to cover all forms of electronic gaming machines –meaning all video games. Amazingly, someone was even caught and arrested for violating the poorly written law by playing an MMO in an internet café. They were actually forced to serve time in prison for playing games.
Fortunately, after receiving pressure from the EU and video gamers everywhere, the law was found to be unconstitutional by the end of the year.
Saudi Arabia: Valentine's Day
Similarly, Saudi Arabia finds Valentine's Day to be in violation of Muslim beliefs. In order to ensure residents don't secretly send gifts to their Valentine's, the government orders all florists and gift shops to remove anything red or otherwise considered to be a symbol of romance prior to the holiday. Apparently the ban on the holiday isn't entirely successful and the country now has a thriving Valentine's Day black market where lovers can buy red roses and other tokens of romance at around six times their ordinary prices.
Tons of baby names: In Denmark, don't get any ideas about coming up with a really original name for your kid. New parents have to choose names from a government-approved list of 7,000 names, or else get permission for an exception.
Gum (Singapore)
It has been illegal to either import or possess chewing gum into Singaporesince the early nineties. According to the Singaporean government, gum use results in ‘litter and vandalism’, with people discarding their gum willy-nilly over pavements, buildings, baby’s faces, etc. According to government spokesmen, before the ban, subways had been delayed because vandals stuck wads of gum between carriage doors, preventing them from closing. Hearing that, we’re surprised that there are not more gum-related plane crashes in non-Singapore countries.
Although the law now allows gum chewing for ‘medicinal purposes’ such as nicotine, the normal fine is still between $500 and $1,000. Pharmacists must collect the ID of those purchasing gum, and non-compliance on their part can mean jail time. It all seems very harsh, but at least it means that no Singaporean school student ever had to remove dried pieces of gum off of the underside of tables during detention time.
- Please note that few of the above bans/restrictions were made for short period of time and may have been lifted in the past.

Yes, you read that right
Advertising alcoholic beverages is banned in India as per the Cable TelevisionNetwork (Regulation) Amendment Bill, which came into effect on 8 September 2000. China-TIME TRAVEL
Ever watched Back To The Future and decided to rewrite your idea of history, based on what you'd just seen? Well that's what Chinese censors feared would happen so introduced a completely rational ban on all TV shows and films which included time travel elements. They've been angered at the frivolous way that shows like Lost and Quantum Leap have dealt with the subject. Damn right, time travel is a serious matter.
California-DICTIONARIES
Mandatory library time at school was, at times, interminable. The only activity that made it seem worthwhile was the sophisticated skill of finding rude words in the dictionary. But, sadly, this time-eroding pastime led to dictionaries beingremoved from Californian schools as they were corrupting youths with their filthy vocabulary. Stupid, dangerous, incredibly useful dictionaries.
Romania - SCRABBLE
Now, we've all taken a Scrabble loss pretty seriously. It's one of the few games that reminds you of how stupid and illiterate you may well be. But in the 80s, Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu went a little overboard and called for a ban. He described it as "overly intellectual" and a "subversive evil". All of which are words he'd probably never be able to play in Scrabble
Iran-MANNEQUINS
General sexiness isn't greatly popular in Iran in case you weren't already aware but you might not be clued up to their distrust of those seductive plastic mannequins. Having probably seen the film Mannequin and its even sexier sequel, Iranian police targeted any mannequins not covered up or with breasts that haven't been sanded down
Denmark -Ovaltine and Marmite
In America, it's practically impossible to purchase milk that isn't fortified with vitamin D, but in Denmark, this would be completely illegal. That's because the country has put a ban on all fortified foods, effectively banning fortified breakfast cereals, Ovaltine and Marmite.
Russia- Emo Clothing
Plenty of people don't like emo fashion, but while it's not that weird for a parent to tell their kids they can't wear that crap outside the house, it's entirely different when the whole government takes such a drastic stand. When the Russian government was trying to stop high suicide rates amongst teens though, they decided emo fashion were to blame.
The government went so far as to dub the style “a threat to national stability” before banning people from wearing emo clothing to public schools or government buildings.
America -HAGGIS
While many non-Scots are happy to impose a self-inflicted ban on the sheep stomach-based delicacy, America has had a 40-year hatred for haggis that they refuse to overturn. The Yanks have a ban on all food made from lungs (fair enough) and despite recent attempts from the Scottish government, they won't budge.
Manila -CLAIRE DANES
Hanging out in Manila and looking to rent Romeo + Juliet or Stardust? Tough luck. After referring to the city as "a ghastly and weird city" which "smelled of cockroaches", every film starring Ms. Danes was eradicated and the star herself was denied any future entrance. Thankfully, for Manila residents, many people from around the world have been surviving without Claire Danes for years and they're doing absolutely fine.

In China and Japan there are restrictions on the name you can give your children, mostly based on technical problems regarding character input, but also appropriateness.
China
"Latin characters, numerals and other non-Chinese symbols are prohibited, as they do not constitute part of a Chinese name under government law. Only Chinese characters are permitted; however, characters which are unable to be input on computers are also disallowed."
http://en.wikipedia.org/w iki/Nam...
China has also moved in the past year to ban the use of English in print, including advertising, newspapers and even on-screen captions in televisionprograms. This doesn't apply to English-language broadcasting of course. The decision was made to protect the Chinese language from contamination.
Japan
"Kanji names in Japan are governed by the Japanese Ministry of Justice's rules on kanji use in names. As of October 2004 there are 2,232 "name kanji" (thejinmeiyō kanji) and "commonly used characters" (the jōyō kanji) used in personal names, and the Japanese government plans to increase this list by 578 kanji in the near future. This would be the largest increase since World War II. Only kanji which appear on the official list may be used in given names. This is intended to ensure that names can be readily written and read by those literate in Japanese. Rules also govern names considered to be inappropriate; for example, in 1993 two parents who tried to name their child Akuma (悪魔, which literally means "devil") were prohibited from doing so after a massive public outcry."

SAUDI ARABIA - HANDSOME MEN
Yeah, you read the headline right.
Three men , delegates from the United Arab Emirates, were ejected from an annual cultural festival and deported from Saudi Arabia to the United Arab Emirates after religious police apparently deemed them “too handsome” because of their chiseled features and perfectly coifed hair.
The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vices was reported to have feared that female visitors of the Jenadrivah Heritage and Cultural Festival, the event the drop-dead handsome men were attending, could have "fallen" for the irresistible chunks of man meat, and rather than letting that terrible scenario play out, they decided to make the hunky dudes leave.
The men were attending the Janadriyah Festival as delegates for a stand promoting the UAE when the incident occurred.
According to Elaph newspaper: “A festival official said the three Emiratis were taken out on the ground they were too handsome and that the Commission members feared female visitors would fall for them.”

Electric bikes. Segways. Toys that move, with the help of a motor, engine or any other mechanical propulsion.
This is in Hong Kong, whether you want to call it a country, state, Special Administrative Region or what (depends who you ask).
No matter what motor/engine size or power, no matter what the speed might be limited to, any vehicle in Hong Kong which isn't powered by human muscle (or wind?), but has some kind of mechanical motor or engine to drive it, is considered a motor cycle and must be approved, registered and piloted as such.
Hence, there are no electric bikes on the streets of Hong Kong. Apart from a few illegal ones, which varies by the area.

Collecting Rain Water in Colorado.
Every state has its fair share of crazy old laws, mostly ones concerned with racial segregation and limiting women’s rights to nothing more than walking, breeding and breathing. But most governments are reasonable enough to not enforce any of them, unlike Colorado, which is punishing farmers and landowners for collecting rain water, under old Western water laws from more than a century ago.
The practice is called “water harvesting” and is probably older than theinvention of fire, but according to Colorado officials it is an undisputed case of theft. When it rains the water hits the ground, burrows deep inside it and fuels underground reservoirs or rivers, the use of which is heavily controlled by the government. So if you collect or “steal” rain water, you are indeed slowly cutting off the government’s source of income, which not only makes you a criminal, but also an anarchist, hippy and probably a draft dodger!

1. GREECE: VIDEO GAMES - In 2002, Greece decided to ban any and all electronic computer games -everything from console games to online Solitaire and Minesweeper fell under this ban. The law was apparently intended to help crack down on Internet gambling; CNET reported that “the blanket ban was decided in February after the government admitted it was incapable of distinguishing innocuous video games from illegal gambling machines.” Soon after, though, a local Greek judge declared the law unconstitutional, and though the law still exists, it seems the Greek government hasn’t been doing much about it.
2. CHINA: TIME TRAVEL - Not the action of time travel itself, but rather the portrayal of it. In early 2011, the State Administration for Radio, Film andTelevision in China declared that time travel is all but prohibited from TV and movies. Apparently, time travel has been very popular in Chinese TV dramas, and the government discouraged them because they “casually make up myths, have monstrous and weird plots, use absurd tactics, and even promote feudalism, superstition, fatalism and reincarnation.” Naturally, the time-travel film Looper was extremely successful in China.
3. RUSSIA: BEING EMO – The emo trend began in the 1980s, characterized by its emotional music similar to punk and rock and the fashion styles that are a mix of punk and goth. To most people, it’s just a phase for teenagers to go through; in Russia, though, it’s a dangerous social group that should be stamped out. In 2008, a piece of legislation (“Government Strategy in the Sphere of Spiritual and Ethical Education”) began to restrict “dangerous teen trends” like the emo culture. The bill describes “emos” as teenagers with studded belts, painted fingernails, facial piercings, and blackhair with face-concealing fringes. It also claims that the emo “negative ideology” encourages depression, social withdrawal and suicide—and it would be irresponsible to allow the trend to continue.
4. CHINA: REINCARNATION – If you don’t have permission from China’s government, you can’t seek reincarnation. While probably not a problem for most people, the Buddhist monks in Tibet are facing a complicated issue. The law, which is very specific on the procedures of permitted reincarnation and is stated to be “an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation,” is an underhanded attempt to diminish the Dalai Lama’s influence and restrict the Buddhist establishment still in existence in Tibet. The current Dalai Lama is 77 years old, and he refuses to be reborn in Tibet as long as it is under Chinese control. In the future, there could be two Dalai Lamas—the one chosen by the Chinese government under their law, and the one chosen by the Buddhist monks.
5. CUBA: CELL PHONES – During Fidel Castro’s reign in Cuba, few citizens owned cell phones. Not because they were too expensive, but because they were banned—only executives working for foreign companies or high communist party officials were allowed to have them. Fidel Castro defended his ban by claiming the restrictions were “necessary sacrifices” in the “battle of ideas” against the U.S. When Raul Castro, younger brother of Fidel, took over control of Cuba in 2008, one of his early actions was to lift the ban on cell phones. While expensive, the freedom of owning a cell phone had many citizens to rushing to purchase their first.

People do strange things, therefore weird laws are written to help straighten them out. Some of these bizarre laws almost seem like urban myths or too ridiculous to be real, yet odd as they are, they were created for a reason. Some of these laws date back several hundred years and were never changed or eliminated and make very little sense in today’s world, but nonetheless these weird laws found all around world do exist.

The Simpsons (Russia)
In 2008, the Russian television channel 2×2 removed The Simpsons from the air, as well as South Park, Family Guy, and several other animated American shows. It did this after being taken to court by the Russian government, which threatened to ban the station entirely unless it stopped airing the shows. Prosecutors called the shows ‘extremist’, claiming they promote violence and cruelty, pornography, anti-social behavior, abound with scenes of mayhem, the infliction of physical and ethical suffering, and are aimed at invoking fear, panic and terror in children.According to the government, children should instead be watching television that teaches them “patriotism, respect for family values and the importance of sport,” according to the Russian government. We’re sure that that will make for some riveting viewing.
UAE, Saudi Arabia Ban the BlackBerry
The United Arab Emirates blocked sending e-mails, access to the internet, and delivering instant messages among Blackberry users in 2010. Saudi Arabia followed suit. Both nations were unhappy that they are unable to monitor such communications. This is because the Blackberry handsets automatically send the encrypted data to computer servers outside the two countries. Abdulrahman Mazi, a board member of the state-controlled Saudi Telecom, has admitted that the decision is intended to put pressure on Blackberry’s Canadian owner, Research in Motion (RIM), to release data from users’ communications “when needed”. The UAE’s telecoms regulator, TRA, said the lack of compliance with local laws raised “judicial, social and national security concerns”.

Saudi Arabia is a land of amusement for me ( though I have never been there).
[HOAX WARNING] Among many things banned there mainly for women ( like uncovered head for women, women without male "guardians" etc etc etc ) this one is unique :
Fork !!!!!
To quote from the report :
Saudi Arabia has banned women from using forks since its formation in 1932 over fears that the utensil represented a threat to the kingdom’s conservative sexual mores.
"There is something very unclean about a woman putting four long hard things in her mouth at once," explains a leading Islamic cleric close to government policymakers.
"When a man sees a woman putting metal with such shapes into her sacred orifice, he cannot help but think the most unnatural thoughts. This measure exists to prevent sexual chaos between men and women."
However, Mario Santerelli, an Italian expatriate who runs an upscale Italianrestaurant in Riyadh, has a different view.
“I can’t wait for the ban to be lifted,” he says. “It’s frustrating having to watch women eat pasta with a knife and spoon. Many of my customers are couples looking for a romantic night out. Being unable to properly eat your food kinda kills the mood.”
